The Electric Avenue

by María Domínguez
(Monterrey N.L. Mexico)

Was in Calgary for 4 months (from January through April 2004) and saw this building still with the Electric Avenue sign. When I was About to leave, passed by and it (the sign) was already removed. Instead there was this other sign announcing the (then) upcoming opening of the New Heaven's Fitness.

Barry's Response - Before the Calgary Flames' great 2004 Stanley cup run, was the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

Before the famous Red Mile was the equally famous "Electric Avenue". See the similarity? They were only 6 blocks apart, to boot.

The Electric Avenue also served during the 1986 and 1989 Playoff series, the latter of which saw the Flames actually win the cup.

The police didn't like it. Too many bars and action in too short of a space led to constant trouble. It was good while it lasted.
